The article is on the main page: GHL called for too many refs on the ice (Welland Tribune, Apr 26/08)
Looks like the league will buck the trend and only go with one ref next year. Is this to improve the hockey or cut costs? Seems like the GHL is taking a step backwards as all the other leagues move towards 2 refs a game. I think the problem was that other leagues tried to have 2 refs per game, but only if they could get qualified refs. That meant some games had one ref and some had two with the leagues ultimate goal being each game having 2 refs in the next few years. The GHL just went out and hired a bunch of unqualified refs so they could have all games with 2 refs.

The GHL doesn't hire the refs....the OHA does. And ALL of Junior B used the 2 ref system in EVERY game for the past two seasons (save for a dozen or so this past season when Hockey Canada used the GHL for their level 6 evaluations)
I heard the Western League is keeping the 2 ref system, and the mid-west is on the fence.
Once the Sutherland Cup round robin begins, all games will be handled by two referees.
This must be to cut costs. I believe what Hockey Canada has been saying since implementing the new standard, and that's eventually the hockey will improve, but it won't happen overnight. Once players realise what they're being called for, they should be smart enough to stop. It's not the ref's fault you hooked a guy. The coaches play a big factor in that too. Teaching a guy to backcheck hard, rather than putting a stick on the puck carrier will keep you out of the penalty box.
For those of us who have gotten a speeding ticket. How many people have said "Stupid cop, shouldn't he be out fighting real crimes, or something?" But really, if we weren't speeding, he wouldn't have ticketed us. And the next time we drive through the area we got nabbed, we slow down (unless you're really stubborn and there's a good chance you'll get nabbed again, that'll teach that cop!)
I agree, I also feel this is a step back for the GHL. Hopefully the Standard stays at the level that Hockey Canada expects, and our game continues to improve.
On another note; The OPJHL, Senior AAA and the OUA (arguably superior leagues covered by OHA officials) have never adopted the two referee system, but have the same standard of play as outlined by Hockey Canada.

two reasons - cost (including travel) and lack of quality this way the weeds in this area will be pulled out and the good refs will flourish this league deserves good refereeing after what I saw the last two seasons, money is better spent on education funds for players

There was an article in the Review the other day on this subject. Going back to one ref is 100% about cutting costs. It went on to say that paying the refs (including travel) costs 150$ per ref. That's outrageous for these blind bozo's.
Having said that...get ready for a lot of behind the play stick work. Guess who was the most vocal about going back to one ref? You guessed the leagues penalty leaders three years running.... the lumberjacks from Welland.

It went on to say that paying the refs (including travel) costs 150$ per ref. How much travel can it be? Primarily, you're league is very closely knit together. It's not like our's where we'll have a game in Chatham and they get refs that are based in Sarnia or Windsor. That's an hr's drive that they're paying for. Start paying for that, and then you can complain about paying refs.
I think it's dumb if your league goes back to 1 ref. If you do, your teams will get used to the old way again, and then what's gonna happen in the Sutherland Cup. You'll play the way you did all year long with only 1 ref, and get caught for all the behind the play stuff.

I thought the whole idea of bringing the three leagues under one umbrella was to gain some uniformity and parity. With some inter-league games being played next season it would seem that the status quo should be maintained. Is this a fact for the Horseshoe League or is it something that will be discussed and decided by all three leagues at their meeting?
