London Knights General Manager Mark Hunter today announced that the team has acquired 19 year old Defenceman Nathan Martine from the Niagara IceDogs in exchange for Overage Winger Jordan Foreman . That must really tick off Martine. Now he doesn't get the chance to play for his home region.

From the posts on the OHL forum it sounds like the IceDogs got burned on this trade.

OHL forum is also saying that Lamb is not returning to the IceDogs and is going to school out east instead. That is why they had the room for another overager. But with Lamb not returning and Martine gone to London, the once strong Icedogs defence is down to 5 returning defencemen. Looks like they will have room for a few rookie D's.

This does not weaken them as they have 6 returning D and two new players on the roster. A signing and a Euro. This has really helped the Dogs as Foreman will be a welcome addition to the forward core. Brown does it again.

From the posts on the OHL forum it sounds like the IceDogs got burned on this trade. Keep in mind, most of those comments were from London fans. Martine is really overrated in my opinion. He's not nearly as good as his numbers indicate. He's extremely inconsistent, outstanding one night, god awful the next. Martine wouldn't have been happy as a 5th dman on this team. The ice time Pietrangelo, Corrente, Schiestel and Day will take up wouldn't have left much for Martine. Fletcher, Van Laren and probably Maione will round out a strong d corps. Foreman is a very difficult player to play against. He's very much like Legein. Strong, aggressive and tenacious and rarely takes a game off. He's a well rounded player who should score 30+ goals if he stays healthy and will make every player on this team a little braver. London got what they need, Niagara got what they needed. A good trade for both teams.

Niagara certainly got what they needed but London sure didn't. Martine spends most of his time out there trying to make as many bad, cross-ice passes as he can. That, and taking ill-timed, needless penalties, should make 9,000 or so fans really unhappy. I'd like to see Hunter's face the first time Martine tries one of those passes inside his own blue line.
Assuming Foreman stays healthy, another win for Brown as coldpooch mentioned.

I agree this is a great move but for a different reason. If you look at the IceDogs roster you'll notice the defense is very strong this season but, next year there could be a huge drop off even if two OA's are blueliners. Dealing Martine opens up one more spot for a young d-man to learn the game with little pressure. The IceDogs will have two spots open this season, we can assume that Van Laren has one spot and the team drafted two defenseman in the 4th round this year. This defense could be solid for three years because of little moves like the one Brown made this week.

I'm use to Jr. B hockey where players tend to leave organizations before they graduate so you only worry about the coming year. And then there are those teams who simply buy a new team every year.
