Tatarnic Selected to Coach Team Atlantic Male Under 17
Saint John, NB – Hockey Canada’s Atlantic Regional Centre, in conjunction with the four Atlantic Hockey Branches, have named Jason Tatarnic of Woodstock, New Brunswick as the Head Coach for Team Atlantic Male Under 17, which will represent Atlantic Canada at the 2009 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge to be held in Port Alberni, British Columbia from December 26, 2008 – January 4, 2009.
“Jason Tatarnic has shown through his involvement with Hockey Canada’s and Hockey New Brunswick High Performance Programs, that he has a passion and commitment for the game and has gained a tremendous respect from the teams in which he has been involved over the last number of years,” said Trevor Murphy, General Manager of Team Atlantic Male Under 17 and Manager of Hockey Canada’s Atlantic Regional Centre. “We look forward to Jason leading the Team Atlantic program over the next year as we continue to raise the profile of the program and ensure that we have the best team of players representing our region at the event in Port Alberni, British Columbia. Jason’s experience at all levels and his passion for developing young players will certainly be a key factor as Team Atlantic strives for its second medal at the event.”
Tatarnic, an Advanced Level I Certified Coach, is currently the Head Coach and Assistant General Manager of the Woodstock Slammers of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League (MJAHL). Tatarnic won a MJAHL Championship with the Slammers during the 2005-2006 season. Prior to joining the Slammers Organization, Tatarnic spent time in Junior A Leagues in Ontario and Saskatchewan, as well as in the CIS with Brock University. Jason has spent time in the Hockey New Brunswick High Performance Programs as the Head Coach of the Under 15 Male and Under 16 Male Programs. Tatarnic has extensive experience working with High Performance Athletes and has experienced success at all levels.

Hockey Canada’s Atlantic Regional Centre and the four Atlantic Hockey Branches also announced the Assistant Coaches, the Director of Hockey Operations and Goaltending Coach for Team Atlantic Male Under 17. Jim Midgley of Rothesay, New Brunswick and Corey Crocker of Amherst, Nova Scotia will join Tatarnic as Assistant Coaches. Ed O’Brien of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador will join the staff as the Director of Hockey Operations, while Peter White, also of St. John’s will join the staff as the Goaltending Coach.
Midgley, an Advanced Level I Certified Coach, is currently serving as an Assistant Coach with the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Prior to joining the Sea Dogs, Midgley spent time with the Acadia Axemen (CIS) as an Assistant Coach (2003-2007). Midgley has also been very active in the Hockey Nova Scotia High Performance Programs as an Assistant Coach and Head Coach. In the past couple of years, Midgley has served as a Head Coach with the Male Under 16 Program and an Assistant Coach with the Male Under 15 Program. He also led the Male Under 14 group of athletes for Hockey Nova Scotia last season.
Crocker, an Advanced Level I Certified Coach, currently serves as the Head Coach and General Manager for the Amherst Ramblers of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League (MJAHL). Prior to his move to Amherst to lead the Ramblers organization, Crocker led the Tri-Pen Frost of the Newfoundland and Labrador Midget AAA League as Head Coach. Crocker has also been involved in High Performance Programming with Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) and Hockey Nova Scotia (HNS). With HNL, Crocker was an Assistant Coach with the Male Under 15 Program as well as the 2007 Canada Games Team. In 2007, Corey was an Assistant Coach with the HNS Male Under 16 Program.
O’Brien, an Advanced Level I Certified Coach, currently serves as an Assistant Coach with the St. John’s Fog Devils of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). O’Brien has previously held the positions of Assistant Coach and Head Coach with the Team Atlantic Program. Prior to his being named to the Fog Devils Organization, O’Brien spent many years with the St. John’s Maple Leafs Midget AAA Program. In addition, O’Brien has extensive experience with Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador’s High Performance Program as a former Program Coordinator and Coach.
White, an Advanced Level I Coach, currently serves as a Goaltending Coach with the St. John’s Fog Devils of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Prior to joining the Fog Devils organization, White enjoyed stints with the St. John’s Maple Leafs Midget AAA Program. White has also spent time with Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador’s High Performance Programming.

The 2009 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge will feature five Regional Canadian Teams (Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Western and Pacific), as well as five International Ice Hockey Federation Countries.
The Under 17 Program is an integral part of Hockey Canada’s High Performance Programs. The World Under 17 Hockey Challenge gives players the opportunity to experience high calibre hockey, while also preparing themselves for possible selection for the National Under 18 Team and National Junior Team.
