The problem occurs when a fight occurs between a player who wants to fight and one that does not. The Roy incident is an example of that. I do not thank any issues would be made if both of the players fighting were the teams resident tough guys. The problem occurs when this tactic is used against an unwilling player. Perhaps banning it in developement leagues would not hurt and like anything else the fans would adjust. I beleive fighting is banned in the NCAA. However being a true Canadian nothing tops a good hockey fight.

i feel that fighting is what 80% of the fans want to see during a game. fans love a good toe to toe tilt. but like you said when a player jumps another player who doesnt want to fight, thats a whole differnt issue. fighting should not be taken out of any league!

Roy boy should be charged for that one. That was not a fight that was assault, if Bertuzzi was charged, this kid should do weekends at least. I remember Mike Pectovich(Canucks) went crazy in Welland and was thrown out of organized hockey until He was 22, he charged the bench with His stick and went chopping.

sphinc you are right on the money, with the first part ouf your comment. what roys kid did was assault, not a fight. the second part may be right too, i just wasn't there to see it. when roys kid saw that the other goalie was not coming out of his crease to engage him, he had enough time to realize that there wasn't going to be a consentual fight. therefore, it is assault. i mean, that other kid couldn't have been further into his net if he tried.

it's necessary in junior hockey, but in this era i think it's been taken to an extreme. like someone mentioned, when two tough guys go toe to toe it's a part of the game. other times maybe when a kid feels using his stick is necessary or someone runs the opposing goalie. but nowadays it seems like kids act like thugs out there and fighting is as good as getting on the scoreboard. you definitley can't revoke it from the game entirely as stick work will increase disgustingly and other cheap shots as well. not sure how to fix the problem however, not sure it can be. i think some players just need to grow up.

Hopefully the poor goalie who got assaulted will have a good lawyer and maybe hit Roy where it hurts the most. I don't know if people seen hockeyfights.com, but a great article on Pat Roy's previous disgressions including assaulting a guy at a team party(settled out of court), ripping his own house apart trying to get at his own wife(now ex), tearing the coaches room apart when he found out he did not get credit for a win. Just like in life some of the guys who you think our big winners prove in real life that they our just spoiled brats when things don't go their way.
