How come a Team run by Louie Savona can't make it out of the first round ? It's not like they don't have a good budget to work with. I guess it's the coaching again eh Louie. Does the coach get the axe again in Welland ?
It's to bad he won't relinquish this team until they are absolutely worth nothing.

sounds personal ohl... I wonder if you were on a previous coaching staff in Welland under Louie? Clayton won't get the axe ! He is the best coach Welland has seen in years.! He far outclassed any other coach in the league. The Fort ERie series was nothing to be embarrassed about. A close series, things just didn't go their way this year! But Clayton has to stay!

I can list you years that a team owned by Lou made it out of the first round ... including a team that went to the sutherland cup pay downs...

queenscowboy - What team did Lou own that made it to the sutherland cup pay downs. Just wondering, never knew he had a team that went that far.

The 1993-94 Thorold Blackhawks made it to the Sutherland Cup playoffs. Nope!! In 1993-94 Falcons beat Thorold in the GHL finals 4 games to 2 to win the GH League championship. Savona never won a GHL championship as Thorold's owner. www.stcatharinesstandard.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=969982

They never said they won a championship, they said the team went to the sutherland cup playdowns. Its true. In 93-94 it was the first year for JUNIOR B without the Eastern/Central division. they wanted to have 4 teams in the round robin. Since there were only three leagues the team with the best (won/lose record in the Playoffs) advanced along with the three division champions.

The tradition of the Suthy Cup playoffs is that it is synonymous with the meeting of the League Champions. So there was an exception to the rule in 93-94 in which Thorold got an entry as an "also-ran". Just wanted to make that clear...as being in the Suthy Cup normally implies winning a championship.

Since there were only three leagues the team with the best (won/lose record in the Playoffs) advanced along with the three division champions. Actually, it wasn't that way at all. It was the first year of the round robin so they decided they wanted the three league champions plus the three finalists (losing team) to be included in a six-team round robin where each team played 10 games (home and away against the other five teams). From the 'Shoe it was St. Catharines and Thorold, from the Mid-West it was Waterloo and Cambridge, and from the West it was St. Marys and Petrolia. The top two teams St. Catharines and Waterloo made it to the Suthy finals which didn't finish until the end of May. The ridiculous system was scrapped the following year.
